This activity uses two different tools for geometric construction of a 60° angle without the use of a protractor - the Arcbuilder and TGT.
Print the two activity sheets for this investigation and use with your Mathomat V7.
We use two different methods in this investigation to construct a 60 edgree angle using Mathomat. The first is with the Arc builder scale on the upper right edge of Mathomat. Follow Michelle Du Toit's steps to build the 60 degree angle. In the second activity follow the steps to build the same angle using Professor Tisdell's TGT, shape 13, in your Mathomat.
There are many different ways to make accurate geometric constructions using Mathomat. It is a tool which you can learn to use instinctively and which allows you make accurate drawings that will foster creativity and innovation in your ideas.Technical drawing is an essential part of the work done by many professionals, such as architects, engineers and graphic designers. It is also a powerful skill that everyone should use in their day to day problem solving... keep your Mathomat handy!
Yes, it's true that many of the repetitive and highly complex drawing tasks that used to be done by hand in the old days are now done using powerful computer design software. We still need to do geometric construction in our heads though, as we use our imagination, and a hand driven tool like Mathomat gives us the ability to extend that thinking by creating far more accurate constructions than we could do free hand with pencil and paper.
