In this activity we use Mathomat triangles to construct quadrilaterals using rigid transformation of the Mathomat shapes to construct composite shapes
A rigid transformation (also known as an isometry) in the plane changes the location of a shape without altering its size or shape. In this activity we create what are known as composite shapes. These are shapes that are constructed from two or more other shapes. We need to begin by learning some geometric terms, such as diagonal, bisecting line, opposite angles, bisecting angles, opposite and adjacent sides. Using these terms we explore the properties of the rhombus by constructing it as a composite shape using rigid transformation of Mathomat triangles.
There are only three important types of triangle, however the rhombus we have explored in this activity is one of the many different kinds of quadrilateral (four sided plane figure). Understanding the properties of these shapes is important and will involve you in basic concepts in geometry such as congruence and an understanding of the properties of the triangles which can be used to construct them.
