What you will learn in this tutorial:

In this video, Chris Tisdell introduces anew tool called a circle arc template, which can replace traditional compasses for geometric constructions. He highlights the limitations of compasses, suchas their difficulty of use, lack of accuracy, and potential danger. The circle arc template aims to address these challenges.

Chris demonstrates the circle arc template, which consists of a circular arc and a straight edge. He mentions that thetemplate comes from the factory and shows how it can be used for basic geometric constructions. In this video, he focuses on constructing parallel lines.

The specific construction problem he tackles is to draw a line parallel to a given line segment AB, passing through a point C that does not lie on AB. He proceeds with the construction as follows:

  1. He starts by drawing a circle arc centred at C, intersecting AB at a point.
  2. He marks another point D on the circle arc.
  3. He draws a line connecting D and the intersection point on AB.
  4. Using the circle arc template again, centred at D, he intersects the line with the circle arc, creating a new pointE.
  5. He repeats the process by drawing a line through E and extending it.
  6. Using the circle arc template centred at E, he intersects the line again, creating a new point F.
  7. Finally, he draws a line through F, and it appears to be parallel to AB and passing through C.

To justify that CG is parallel to AB, he uses the concept of similar triangles. He observes that triangles CEG and DEFare similar because the corresponding sides are in the ratio of 2:1. Since the corresponding angles of similar triangles are equal, he concludes that angleECG is equal to angle EDF. Therefore, AB and CG must be parallel.

This construction demonstrates the power and precision of the circle arc template as a tool for geometric constructions, offering advantages over traditional compasses. It allows for accurate and efficient constructions of parallel lines and other geometric shapes.

In summary, Chris Tisdell introduces the circle arc template as a tool to replace compasses in geometric constructions. He demonstrates its use in constructing parallel lines and justifies the parallelism using the concept of similar triangles. This tool enhances precision and safety in geometric constructions, making them more accessible to learners and professionals alike.
