In this presentation, Chris Tisdell introduces a new invention, a circle arc template designed to enhance the learning and teaching of geometry. This tool is safer, easier to use, and provides more accurate drawings compared to traditional compasses. Chris demonstrates how to use the circle arc template to bisect an angle, a fundamental geometric construction.
Chris begins by drawing an angle with points A, B, and C. Chris then places the circle arc template at point B and draws an arc, creating two new points, D and E. Next, he uses D and E as centres to draw two more arcs, which intersect at a point. Finally, he draws a line segment from B to this intersection point, creating a line that bisects the angle ABC.
Chris emphasises the accuracy of this construction and compares it to traditional compasses, which can be less precise. He also mentions that angle bisection isa fundamental technique in constructive geometry and can be used for more complex constructions.
Additionally,Chris highlights an interesting property of the constructed line segment. Any point along this line is equidistant from the two arms of the angle, demonstrating a connection between angles and lengths.
Chris concludes by expressing his excitement about the new tool and asks the audience if they have used similar tools or encountered issues with traditional compasses, inviting their feedback and thoughts on the invention.
