What you will learn in this tutorial:

In this educational video, Chris Tisdell  shows an approach to constructing integers, which are whole numbers like 3, 24, and -6, using two simple tools: a circle arc template and a straightedge. The concept of integers is a cornerstone in mathematics, and this tutorial provides an engaging connection between geometry and the world of numbers.

Imagine a number line – a straight line that stretches infinitely in both directions. Chris begins by marking a special point on this number line and labels it as "zero." Zero is like our mathematical starting point - a reference point, if you like.

Now, here's where the circle arc template comes into play. It's a handy tool that allows us to create curved lines with precision. Think of it as a  better alternative to a compass.

With "zero" as our reference,Chris uses the circle arc template to create more points along the number line.Starting at "zero," he draws a curved line that is a consistent distance from zero to form -1 and +1. He then continues this with arcs centred at -1 and +1 to form -2 and +2. As we follow this path, we encounter new points on the number line. These points are evenly spaced apart, each one unit away from the next.

What's remarkable is that by drawing these curved lines using the circle arc template, we can construct all the integers we want! We can create positive integers by moving to the right from"zero" and negative integers by moving to the left.

For example, we can start at"zero," then move one unit to the right, and we've constructed the integer 1. If we move two units to the left from "zero," we've created the integer -2.

This clever geometric approach shows the beautiful connection between numbers and shapes. It demonstrates that mathematics isn't just about numbers and equations but also about patterns and relationships in the world around us.

In conclusion, this video by Chris Tisdell uses a circle arc template to construct integers on a number line. Integers are those important whole numbers that play a crucial role in mathematics. This exploration showcases how geometry and numbers can intertwine in a fun and creative way, providing a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and their practical applications.
